Your role as team manager Communications at AAP:
Communication is essential for AAP. Whether it concerns communication to the general public, donors, policymakers, press, partner organisations or the internal organisation. In this exciting job, you will give strategic and tactical substance to putting AAP on the map in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Europe (Brussels).

As cooperating team manager of the Communications staff department, you will work on behalf of internal clients; Fundraising, Public Policy and the Executive Board. Together with your team, you facilitate them in achieving their goals and give solicited and unsolicited advice. Your challenge will be to guard the image of AAP and ensure (policy-related) coherence in communication. Furthermore, your main tasks are:

Spotting market developments: you have a feel for opportunities.
Managing an international team of 6 employees (Netherlands, Spain, Germany).
Strategy and execution of digital marketing communications (website, social media, monitoring)
Creating insight into the impact of AAP's communications.
Strategy and implementation of internal communications.

This is your unique workplace as team manager Communications at AAP:
From the terrace at the visitor centre, you walk back to the office after your lunch through the lush greenery. You hear chimpanzee sounds in the distance. A glass door gives you access to a modern and sustainable building with lots of natural materials and inspiring photos of the animals that rely on our daily care. The people are warm and open, your workplace is well cared for and has a fresh look. You will connect and work closely with 6 driven communication team members, 3 of whom are in Almere, 2 in Spain and 1 in Germany. You can travel by public transport from, for example, Hilversum or Almere Stad, or come by car and park right next to the building. A few times a year, you will travel to Spain to guide your Spanish team members in their personal development, making annual plans and achieving targets.

What we ask of our new team manager Communications:
You are a strategically strong communication professional with a hands-on mentality and affinity with animal welfare and nature. You have a razor-sharp feel for human, cultural and political relationships and a nose for news. You are able to prioritise and coordinate work and you are strong in project management. You have the ability to find answers to questions and invent solutions to challenges. You can empathise with the perspective of different target groups. Furthermore, you are the central pivot in the sometimes lightning-fast dynamics of a process and the (international) complexity of stakeholders and target groups. Colleagues keep you sharp and you arrange the frameworks to make that possible; you recognise the potential in other people and get that potential out. We are looking for someone who identifies relevant data, analyses it and gives advice or makes decisions based on this data. You take the lead in your work: from advice to implementation and evaluation. Empathy is your basic attitude, without being soft.

Furthermore, you bring:

Minimum higher educational working and thinking level, towards (marketing) communication or journalism.
You have at least 5 years of relevant work experience, including:
- International work experience (Germany and Spain are a plus);
Extensive experience in reaching-and interacting with-the media (online and offline);
Extensive experience with (strategic deployment of) digital marketing communication systems such as websites, social media monitoring, Google Analytics, Google Search Console;
Experience of the Dutch market;
Experience of managing a team;
You are proactive; you spot opportunities and know how to create them and capitalise on them with conviction.
Your command of the Dutch and English languages is excellent, both verbally and in writing.
You are a EU citizen or you have a valid working permit and residency in The Netherlands.

AAP is a European animal welfare organisation dedicated to exotic mammals, such as primates, tigers and lions. Millions of them are kept in poor conditions as pets, are illegally traded or brutally exploited in circuses and other forms of entertainment. This causes unimaginable suffering. We rescue animals in need, so they can recover both mentally and physically. When they are rehabilitated and ready to move on, we find them a good forever home. Thus creating space for new animals in need.

Simultaneously, we advocate for better laws and regulations across Europe to tackle private ownership of exotic animals, illegal wildlife trade and entertainment with wild animals. Because we believe only sustainable EU-wide solutions can effectively prevent the suffering of exotic animals in the future.

We have around 95 (salaried) employees and more than 200 volunteers. We are based at a spacious and modern location in the middle of the greenery near Almere. Our office is on the same site as our rescue centre; nowhere can you see the results of your work so directly on a daily basis as with us. Around 24 paid staff and 16 volunteers work at AAP in Spain.
